old population? The civilization createdrnon this continent by British and Europeanrnpeoples cannot survive the disappearancernof the people themselves; it isrnpreposterous to expect that civilization tornbe transmitted as a functioning whole tornanother population to whom it is entirelyrnalien. Perhaps awareness of this commonsenserntruth makes me a “white nationalist,”rnbut I am quite bored with beingrncalled unpleasant names by phoniesrnlike Mr. Unz who unctuously spout offrnabout “white nationalism” when theirrnown concept of a “nation” consists merelyrnin lip service to a handful of Enlightenmentrnplatitudes torn from the Declarationrnof Independence and whosern”loyalty” to their country apparentlyrnreaches no further than how much moneyrncan be milked from it.rnMr. Unz may be correct about Hispanicrnsupport for California state Republicanrncandidates prior to Prop, 187. Myrnarticle, however, was almost entirelyrnabout the impact of the Hispanic vote onrnpresidential politics—specifically, its impactrnon the 1996 Dole campaign and thernBush campaign this year. In any case,rnRepublicans could make up for the lostrnHispanic votes by mobilizing whiternAmerican voters around immigrationrncontrol. Governor Bush, as of this timern(June), is now leading Al Gore in a nationalrnpoll by 5 points, despite trailingrnMr. Gore among Hispanics by some 12rnpoints in the same poll. The poll showsrnnot only that Mr. Bush has failed to attractrnHispanic voters —despite his panderingrnto them and his support for morernimmigration —but also that it remainsrnpossible for a GOP presidential candidaternto beat a Democrat in a nationalrnelection without winning the Hispanicrnvote at all.rnMoreover, the decline of Hispanicrnsupport for other GOP candidates in Californiarnmay be due to factors other thanrnProp. 187. Does the rise of a powerfulrnleft-wing Hispanic political movementrnhave nothing to do with the decline?rnWhat about enactment of the so-calledrn”motor voter” bill that was widely predictedrnto lead to the death of the GOP inrnCalifornia? What about Republican oppositionrnto welfare, affirmative action, rnunions, and other liberal causes thatrnmany low-income Hispanic voters support?rnWhy should the decline of Hispanicrnsupport for Republicans be blamed exclusivelyrnon Prop. 187? How convenientrnto blame all of it on Prop. 187 when yournalready favor mass immigration for otherrnreasons! To argue that the decline isrncaused by Prop. 187 alone simply becausernit followed the 1994 ballot measurernis an elementary example of the post hocrnergo propter hoc fallacy. Surely Mr. Unz,rnreported by the New RepuhUc as havingrnprobably the world’s highest IQ, can recognizerna logical fallacy when he sees one.rnAs for the cruelty of “expelling 300,000rnimmigrant children from public schools,”rnso what? Prop. 187 would have forced nornone out of school who had a legal right tornbe in this country. Again, Mr. Unz’s pretensernof concern for assimilation is beliedrnby his zeal for the “rights” of the childrenrnof illegal aliens. The first, elementaryrnstep toward assimilation is to enter thisrncountry in accordance with its laws.rnFinally, I cannot speak about thern”harsh anti-Hispanic rhetoric and images”rnwith which the Prop. 187 campaignrnwas supposedly conducted, notrnhaving been part of the campaign or presentrnin the state at the time. But I amrnaware of the innumerable death threats, rnobscene calls and letters, viciously anti-rnAmerican and anti-white vituperation, rnand outright physical violence withrnwhich pro-187 activists have been assaultedrnand are being assaulted to this day byrnHispanic and pro-immigration fanatics.rnIt is telling that Mr. Unz’s tears are shedrnover the “harsh” things said about Hispanicrnimmigrants and not over the filthyrnand dangerous things said and done tornhis fellow citizens merely for wishing tornenforce their country’s immigration laws.rnOn the Return of Jim CrowrnWilliam Murchison’s “Color MernKweisi” {Views, May 2000) brings tornmind an aspect of the so-called “civilrnrights” movement which has played anrnactive part in undermining this country.rnWliile the left has failed to achieve totalrncollectivization through the democraticrnprocess, it has introduced a caste systemrnthat can circumvent both referenda andrnethics via “civil rights” laws.rn”The college education I never had. 99rnThat’s how more than one reader has described Chronicles: A Magazine of American Culture.rnChronicles makes an ideal graduation gift, both for the student about to enter college and the onernembarking on his career.
