language has long since become more a question of politicsrnthan of linguistics. In the Soviet Union, the idea of “Ukrainian”rn(and, even more absurdly, “Byelorussian”) language andrnnationality was first encouraged because it was useful to Leninrnand company to break up the Russian nation; and then, at thernappropriate time, the parts were beaten into conformity withrnthe artificial formula “national in form, socialist in content.” Inrnthe post-communist era, rainbow fascism finds the dissolutionrnof historic nationhood in the formerly communist world onernaccomplishment of Lenin, Stalin, and Tito that should not onlyrnbe maintained but will, in Talbott’s mind, set the stage for thernfinal rejection of “tribalism” and the creation of a multinationalrnglobal state. His claim that the United States is already a precursorrnof such a state points to a similar manipulation of ethnolinguisticrnidentity; if yesterday Byelorussian turned out to be arnnational language, who is to say Ebonics will not be tomorrow?rnRainbow fascism is very fond of what someone has called thern”Stone in the Garden of Eden” thesis. This is the notion thatrnthere was a flat rock lying around somewhere on Day Six of creation, rnwith the 1998 borders of all the countries scratched on it,rnborders which are sacrosanct and enforceable by the UnitedrnStates. One odd thing about this idea—really, a rank superstitionrn—is that it is subject to mindless, even arbitrary revision. Ifrna recognized state—say, Yugoslavia or the Soviet Union—ceasesrnto exist, then its former internal administrative lines becomernimbued with eternal Edenic inviolability. Federal states, inrnparticular, seem to be susceptible to this now-you-see-it, nowyou-rndon’t standard. I expect that, in the not-too-distant future, rncertain states in the American Southwest, having been forrndecades little more than administrative appendages of Washington, rnwill miraculously rediscover their sovereignty once theyrnbecome officially Spanish-speaking.rnThere is one area in which Huntington is somewhat deficient:rnhe correctly focuses on the minority ethnic and commercialrnskew to non-national American policy but does not reallyrnexamine the deeper philosophical mandate inherent inrnglobalization. We should bear in mind that rainbow fascism, rnlike its red and brown kin, is above all an ideology, a malignantrnderivative of the moral corruption and demographic collapse ofrnChristian civilization. Indeed, it might be more accurate to sayrnthat, in its messianic aspect, it is a sort of Christian heresy. Withrnits predecessors, rainbow fascism shares a basically materialisticrncore combined with a flexibility and spiritual sensitivity that isrnfar more subtle and seductive. If, in theological terms, communismrnwas the temptation to change stones into bread, if nationalrnsocialism was a genetic and materialistic perversion ofrnthe idea of the “peculiar people” elect of God, then rainbow fascismrnhas an aspect of a materialized Pentecost run riot, from itsrnseemingly endless ability to incorporate subordinate ideologiesrn(New Age, environmentalism, feminism) to its claim to bestowrncomplete fi’eedom within “diversity.” This “white noise” babblernof a multitude of voices, each in its own distinctive way expressingrnthe same vacuity, may indeed turn out to be the “endrnof history” prophesied by Francis Fukuyama. That tlie UnitedrnStates—responding to an ill-conceived summons to “nationalrngreahiess”—would find itself the indispensable midwife for thernbirth of such a monster should be repugnant to any real patriot, rnto any true son of our fatherland.
