Wade. In responsernto this action, some 14,000 members ofrnthe ABA resigned in protest. Many attorneysrnfelt it was impossible for them tornremain a member of, let alone contributernmoney to, an organization thatrnnow embraced abortion on demand asrna constitutional right. It was in this climaternthat a group of six attorneys met inrnSt. Louis on October 23, 1993, to formrnan organization called National Lawyersrnfor Life. The six founding lawyers (myselfrnincluded) were all officers or membersrnof state pro-life groups, and our initialrngoal was merely to coordinaternactivities with other pro-life groups. Butrnthe overwhelming support we receivedrnfrom attorneys across the country—whornwere fed up with the ABA not only onrnthe issue of abortion, but on more practicalrnmatters, including services provided, rnthe high price of membership, andrnthe future direction of the ABA—convincedrnus that the time was indeed ripernfor the formation of a full-blown alternativernto the ABA, which we decided torncall the National Lawyers Associationrn(NLA),rnCurrently, the NLA has some 700rnmembers in all 50 states and the Districtrnof Columbia and has mass mailings inrnthe works designed to tap into thern90,000 attorneys nationwide who are potentialrnmembers of this new organization.rnThe NLA remains unequivocallyrnpro-life and hopes to dispel the imagernthat “abortion on demand” is acceptablernto the legal profession as a whole.rnMore information about the NLA, andrnabout its first national conventionrnscheduled for October, to be held in St.rnLouis, can be obtained bv calling me atrn800-471-2994 (Fax: 816-471-2995).rnMario Mandina is president of the NLArnin Kansas City, Missouri.rn48/CHRONICLESrnrnrn
