genuinely equal: self-respectingnatheists, self-respecting homosexuals, nand other relativists with self-regard arenexceptionally beautiliil creatures whosenpublic aims must be vouchsafed by thentender compassion of the same crusadersnwho are zealously driving self-respectingnreligionists, traditionalists, and othernconservative dragons from Camelot’snpublic square. Moral Majority mustnnever be allowed to “enforce privatenmorality” upon even the most lasciviousnelements of the body politic, but advocatesnof welfare-state economics mustnhave the statutory power to make theirndistributionist morality compulsory fornall capitalists. The self-respect of feministsnand integrationists must be bolsterednby afSrmative-action programs, nwhile the self-esteem of meritist employersnis degraded with the discardingnof sex- and race-blind standards. Dworkinndoes admit that “any practical program”nfor implementing his vision “will worknimperfectly and will inevitably involvenspeculation, compromise, and arbitrarynlines in the face of ignorance.” But thennfor him and for his liberal editors andnreaders, these lines of arbitrariness willncomfortably circumscribe their fragilenself-respect, while the face of ignorancenradiates a smile of distinctive approval.
